The district’s TOY program is part of the national program that has been in place for over 50 years. As part of the program, each of the district’s 32 schools named a TOY to represent it in the coming year. A selection committee interviewed each candidate, and narrowed the field to three finalists — one each from the elementary, middle, and high school level. The WCPS Teacher of the Year will be selected from the three finalists and announced at the WCPS Teacher, Assistant Principal, & Principal of the Year Banquet, to be held at Walnut Creek Country Club on May 3 at 5:30 PM

“Those who are named a Teacher of the Year represent the best of the teaching profession,” states Dr. Yvette Smith Mason, WCPS Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources & Professional Development. “We are excited to honor and recognize each school’s Teacher of the Year for their achievement, and wish our three finalists the very best in this next round of the district’s Teacher of the Year program.”

Principals say the district finalists are outstanding candidates and each has the necessary characteristics and qualifications to effectively represent their peers and colleagues across Wayne County Public Schools and North Carolina in the Teacher of the Year program.

Elementary Finalist

“Mrs. Tilden is an exceptional teacher,” states Charles Smith, RWE principal. “When you go into Mrs. Tilden’s class, you will see students playing instruments through technology and state of the art techniques. Her energy is contagious. She has truly inspired students and teachers to go above in effort, performance, and desire to learn.”

Mrs. Tilden has five years of teaching experience, with four year at her present school. She holds a bachelor’s degree in music education and a master’s degree in divinity.

Middle Finalist

“Ms. Johnson is a phenomenal teacher, person, and leader in our school who continuously strives to inspire others,” states Catherine Fulcher, EWM principal. “Her lessons are innovative and creative. Ms. Johnson captivates her students by engaging them in all kinds of hands-on-activities, and even dresses up in character for the students.”

Ms. Johnson has 25 years teaching experience, all at her present school. She is national board certified. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business with a concentration in Marketing, and a master’s degree in instructional technology.

High Finalist

“I have found Ms. King to be an outstanding educator,” states Kevin Smith, SWH principal. “In every case, she has demonstrated the ability to connect with her students and consistently delivers real world, meaningful instruction. Her reflective nature, work ethic and steady temperament lead to high student achievement and continuous self-improvement.”

Ms. King has 14 years of teaching experience, all at her present school. She is national board certified. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English education 9-12 and an Advance Placement (AP) certification in English Language and Composition.

The district’s Teacher of the Year will win a $2,500 stipend and move on to a regional level of the Teacher of the Year program. The two district finalists will receive a $1,500 stipend.
