WCPS Announces Student Make-Up Days
This is the image for the news article titled WCPS Announces Student Make-Up DaysSpecial Note:  The Designated Workday moved to January 19 has been made a Student Make-Up Day.

Due to the recent winter storm, inclement weather forced Wayne County Public Schools to close a total of three days for students enrolled at traditional academic calendar schools and Goldsboro High. Wayne Early/Middle College High and Wayne School of Engineering were closed for a total of four days for students. Three schools, Grantham Elementary, Grantham Middle, and Northeast Elementary were also closed to students on January 2, due to utilities issues.

After reviewing local calendar options and the North Carolina General Statute §115C-84: School Calendar, which requires that the district’s school calendars have a minimum of 185 days or 1,025 hours of instruction covering at least nine calendar months, WCPS administrators have developed the following plan for WCPS make-up time:

Traditional Calendar: February 19 will become the district’s first student Make-Up Day (originally a Teacher Workday). Three early release days, January 31, February 28, and March 21, will become full days in order to recover lost instructional time. March 30 will become the district’s second student Make-Up Day (originally a Holiday). Northeast Elementary and Grantham Middle will get credit for the January 2 closure, as students reported to school and were sent home. The closure for Grantham Elementary will be waived, as the closure was called before students reported to school.

Special Note: As a result of the school closures, and the moving of the high school testing calendar, the end of First Semester has been changed for the Traditional Academic Calendar. The Designated Workday scheduled for January 16 will be changed to a student day. The Designated Workday has been moved to January 19. The Designated Workday was protected to help teachers/counselors (especially those at the high school level) make the transition between semesters.

Non-Traditional Calendar (GHS, WEMCHS, & WSE): February 19 will become the district’s first student Make-Up Day (originally a Teacher Workday). The next two Make-Up Days will become March 9 (originally a Teacher Workday) and March 30 (originally a Holiday). The January 3 closure will be waived for Wayne Early/Middle College High and Wayne School of Engineering.

“There are many limitations with the school calendar law for how school districts can make-up time for school closures,” states Dr. Michael Dunsmore, Superintendent. “Recognizing that winter is still far from over, this make-up schedule will help maximize instructional time for students while also leaving us some cushion in the event more changes to academic calendars need to be made as a result of inclement weather.”

Information about employee make-up time will be communicated directly with staff. Information about the High School exam schedule for non-traditional academic calendar schools will be communicated with students after they return to class today.
