The students, Gavin (Northwest Elementary) and Anna (Rosewood Elementary), earned their way into the chorus through their voices and musical talents.

The North Carolina Elementary School Honors Chorus is sponsored by the North Carolina Music Educators Association. The chorus provides talented and hardworking singers from elementary schools an opportunity to perform under a nationally known choral conductor.

Gavin and Anna competed against hundreds of students across the state to be selected to participate in the 195 member chorus. They were required to audition a voice part from a selected piece before a judge, who then scored them on various skills such as breathing, posture, articulation, pitch and musicianship.

Leading up to the concerts, the two students spent several weeks learning their song parts, both on their own and with the assistance of their music teachers, Sharon Caughron (NWE) and Denise Tilden (RWE). The students then came together in Winston Salem to rehearse collectively as a group on Saturday, November 11. The State Elementary Honors Chorus concert was held the following day at the historic Stevens Center in downtown Winston Salem.
